Enduringly popular, Sheila Burnford's story The Incredible Journey recounts the heroic efforts of a trio of pets to rejoin their human family, the Hunters. When their people leave on a trip, the pets are boarded at the farm of John Longridge, a friend of Tim Hunter. Longridge soon sets out on a hunting and fishing trip, leaving the animals with his housekeeper. Fearing a permanent separation, the lonesome pets decide to leave in search of the Hunters. The Siamese cat Tao, aging bull terrier Bodger, and young retriever Luath travel many miles of Canadian wilderness, surviving hunger and battles with other animals as they struggle over mountains and across rivers. At last, they are reunited with the Hunters, and the reunion is a joyous one. The engaging personalities of the animals have endeared Burnford's novel to generations of readers since the book was published in 1961. Students from fourth grade up will enjoy this adventure novel.
