J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of Rings trilogy is world-renowned and critically acclaimed for its breathtaking, expansive depth, which has garnered a loyal following that continues to increase exponentially, especially with the introduction of Peter Jackson’s film adaptations in the early 21st century. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is the excellent prequel to the trilogy, and introduces us to the stalwart, supporting character of the Lord of Rings series, Bilbo Baggins. A hobbit entirely focused on maintaining his sense of comfort and normalcy in his stolid world, Bilbo is reluctantly persuaded to join the wizard Gandalf on his mission to reclaim dwarf treasure, which has been secreted away by the notorious dragon Smaug. Alongside thirteen dwarves, Bilbo becomes the unlikely hero, as the group is plagued by an array of fantastical roadblocks, meeting wise elves, troublesome trolls, vexing goblins, and Gollum, a dastardly creature who will be familiar to readers of Tolkien’s trilogy. The epic journey that Tolkien concocts is a perfect mixture of gorgeous description and electrifying action, and readers will cheer for Bilbo, while smiling at the hobbit’s sedate and staid character, who slowly blossoms into heroic proportions. Anyone with an avid literary love should make time for an introduction to the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, arguably the world's most beloved hobbit, and enjoy the grand, majestic scale of Tolkien's Middle Earth.
