An Avi story for young readers, Poppy is the tale of a young deer mouse, who turns courageous in her defense of small creatures from Mr. Ocax, the great horned owl of the forest. After her playmate, Ragweed, is killed during a secret romp in Dimwood Forest, Poppy’s whole family is threatened with retribution by the implacable owl. Ocax rules the forest, and has forbidden other creatures to move about without his permission. Poppy’s father, Lungwort, grows depressed when his family is not allowed to relocate in search of food, and stricken with guilt, Poppy enlists a porcupine, named Ereth, to help her defeat the enemy. With the help of a fake owl and one of Ereth’s quills, Poppy overcomes Ocax, and the forest is safe for one and all. This adventure story explores the themes of fairness, loyalty, and courage in an intelligent manner that children can readily comprehend.
