Julius Caesar

By William Shakespeare (11)

Show/Hide Info

In William Shakespeare’s historical tragedy Julius Caesar, victorious General Caesar returns to Rome, after defeating Pompey, amid celebration and a single soothsayer screaming, “Beware the ides of March.” Unbeknownst to Caesar, some of his closest allies believe him power hungry, and want to depose him before he becomes a tyrant. The conniving Cassius convinces the honorable Marcus Brutus that they will be acting on behalf of the people by assassinating Caesar. On March 15, Caesar, ignoring the soothsayer and his wife’s misgivings, appears before the Senate, where he is surrounded and slain. Caesar’s closest friend Marcus Antonius joins Octavius, Caesar’s successor, and they mount an army against Cassius and Brutus. Rome descends into civil war and chaos. While Cassius and Brutus are exiled, his wife Portia, whom he loves very deeply, kills herself. Bloody battles rage, and Brutus’ friends take their own lives in the face of certain defeat; but Brutus, once a loving friend to Caesar, has only just begun to suffer for loving Rome more. Julius Caesar contains many famous Shakespearean speeches, such as Caesar’s funeral speech, delivered by Antonius, which begins, “Friends, Roman’s, countrymen; lend me your ears.”
