Since its publication in 1971, Go Ask Alice has shocked and sobered young adult readers. The anonymous narrator keeps a diary of her tumultuous fifteenth year, in which she moves to a new town, struggles to fit in, and is exposed to drug use. The narrator's experiences alienate the young girl from her boyfriend, and turn her towards other at-risk teens, such as Chris, a girl whom the narrator travels to San Francisco with, beginning to live an alternative life style. The two girls try unsuccessfully to kick their drug habit, returning home where eventually they are brought up on possession charges. The narrator hitchhikes back to the West Coast, sinking lower and lower until a priest contacts her parents, and she again returns home. The narrator thinks hopefully of a future in which she counsels children, but she cannot really return to normal life. The death of her grandparents, and her own incarceration in a hospital, spark morbid LSD flashbacks, while a new friendship with an understanding college freshman offers hope. Readers learn that the narrator died within a few weeks of the journal’s conclusion, a chilling end to a young life that will resonate with fellow teenagers.
