“A Series of Unfortunate Events” is a set of seven children’s novels by the darkly humorous Lemony Snicket. Snicket’s series follows the misadventures of the Baudelaire children: Violet, a clever inventor, Klaus, a voracious reader, and Sunny, a sharp-toothed biter. The three are orphaned when a tragic fire claims both of their parents. Left to the care of a distant cousin, Count Olaf, the children quickly discover Olaf is more cruel mercenary than devoted guardian, and will stop at nothing to obtain the Baudelaire fortune. The 13 novels chronicle the siblings’ attempts to escape the ever-grasping clutches of Olaf, employing every skill in their arsenal to flee and find sanctuary. “A Series of Unfortunate Events” is indeed, a series of never-ending unfortunate circumstances that befall the Baudelaire siblings, but the series is never dour; rather, readers will find themselves laughing at Snicket’s sly wit, and rooting for the children to finally reach a happy ending.
