What in the heck is an ‘Enhanced eBook’ anyway?

So you’ve come to to find that resource that will help you with your upcoming lesson. You’ve found the perfect eBook and you are ready to click the button, ‘Add to Cart’. Then you notice.. there are two choices. A ‘Regular eBook’ and a ‘Enhanced eBook’. You may ask yourself, what is a ‘Enhanced eBook’? Why is it $5 more?

In this post we will go over the basics of what is a ‘Enhanced eBook’ and how it can really enhance your freedom in teaching your students?  So let’s dive in.

What are Enhanced eBooks?
Enhanced eBooks are unlocked PDFs, which allow users to copy and paste text and certain images.  You can then paste these elements into other applications, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Apple® Pages or Keynote, whiteboard software and much more.  You can then fine tune the learning experience to fit your teaching style and/or your student’s needs.

Some publishers (ie: Evan-Moor, Creative Teaching Press & Teacher Created Resources) also enable the use of the Typewriter Tool* in Adobe Reader in their Enhanced eBooks. *the Typewriter Tool allow you to edit and add new text right inside Adobe.

So give me an example, how can I use an Enhanced copy to in my classroom?
The possibilities are nearly endless.  So as stated above, you have two educational resources for building your students Math skills.  You really like lesson 5 from one resource but also lesson 3 in the other.  You feel they go together well.  So with an Enhanced eBook, you can copy out lesson 5 from the first resource and lesson 3 from the second, paste it into your favorite word processor and you’ve got a customized lesson for that day.

Enhanced eBooks also make it easier to create presentation for your whiteboard or digital overhead.  Allowing you to only show the elements that you want your students to see.

These are just two examples.. hopefully you are thinking of even more uses!

Can I copy all of the content from an enhanced eBook, including images and formatting?
Due to the nature of PDF files, not all images can be copied easily.  Also, please keep in mind that text formatting will also be lost. Users can customize the text formatting by copying and pasting the text into a word processor or application that allows text editing, and then adding the desired formatting.

Is every eBook available in both regular and enhanced versions?
While not all of our publishers sell enhanced eBooks, you can find enhanced materials from many of our top publishers. Please note that some titles may not be available as enhanced eBooks, specifically if they contain mostly graphics, which cannot be copied, or have many scanned pages that interfere with selecting text.

Do I need special software to view and use enhanced eBooks?
Yes – you need the latest version of Adobe Reader which can be downloaded for free.

Now I have Adobe Reader and an Enhanced eBook – what next?
Using Acrobat Reader, just copy and paste the sections of the enhanced eBook you need into a word processor like Microsoft Word or Apple Pages, then add your own questions, pictures, or examples for truly custom lessons. You can also use text from enhanced eBooks to build lessons for your Interactive Whiteboard, or take advantage of programs that can translate the content of PDF’s into other languages.

Are there any advantages to using a paid version of Adobe Acrobat?
There are always advantages to purchasing the full, more complete version of any application, however it’s a not a requirement in this case.  With our enhanced ebooks, by purchasing Adobe Acrobat, you can also rotate and extract pages and copy certain images or objects.  *Some of these features can also be achieved by copying and pasting the elements you wish to manipulate into other applications such as some word processors and or other creative applications.

Can I use other PDF reader applications with the enhanced eBooks?
Yes, absolutely.  However, what you can do and not do will largely depend on the tools available in the application.

Do enhanced eBooks have copyrights?
Yes! Enhanced eBooks are subject to the same copyright laws as regular eBooks.

I purchased the Regular eBook and now I think the Enhanced might work better for me. Do I have to repurchase the Enhanced copy or is there an option to upgrade?
It will depend on when you purchased the Regular eBook, but under most circumstances if you would like to upgrade from a regular eBook to the same, Enhanced product, please contact our Customer Service Department. We can then help you upgrade to the Enhanced version for the price difference.

Enhanced eBooks are provided by some publishers to give Educators more tools to fine tune the learning experience in their classroom.  If you have any other questions that we’ve not covered in this post, you can contact our Customer Service Department.
